I lost my UK driving licence in the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, and have a question ?

If I return to UK and try to hire a car, do I need to show a driving licence or will the Car Hire Agency accept that my licence exists but in the Records at Cardiff. I fully intend regaining my licence, but need a vehicle meanwhile.
