How did the ancient Dutch construct buildings?

I have heard that the ancient Dutch constructed major buildings such as churches on top of cow hides for flotation and that today they put Styrofoam under their roads and that the Amsterdam airport floats on water. Can anyone verify this or provide links to true or false?
