Holocaust crematoria?

I saw today that the bodies of the tsunami victims in Japan are being cremated. They're only able to burn 18 bodies a day in a crematorium and are having problems with disposing of all the dead as a result to prevent disease etc. How were the nazis able to cremate thousands of bodies a day using older technology? It would have required hundreds of ovens per camp and this doesn't seem to be the case.
